Will HMRC remind you about MTD deadlines?

Partly, and not in a way to lean on. HMRC writes to you when MTD is about to apply to you, sends messages to your HMRC online account if you’ve chosen digital contact, and makes national announcements around the big dates. That adds up to awareness, not an alarm: nothing from HMRC is guaranteed to land before your particular deadline, and HMRC’s guidance treats knowing the dates as your job. Covering that job takes two minutes: a calendar download and a free 7-day email reminder.

What does HMRC send before a deadline?

  • Letters when you’re joining: HMRC writes to people whose filed returns put them over the threshold, ahead of each April start.
  • Letters when HMRC signs you up: from September 2026, HMRC is signing up people who should already be using MTD but haven’t signed up themselves, in stages, with a letter to each (announced 12 August 2026 (opens in a new tab)). What that letter means has the detail.
  • Messages in your HMRC online account, if your contact preference is digital. They sit there until you sign in, so they only work if you check.
  • National pushes around big dates: HMRC’s press release of 23 July 2026 (opens in a new tab) noted that over 864,000 sole traders and landlords faced the 7 August date, and its 12 August 2026 follow-up (opens in a new tab) reported more than 436,000 first updates filed and over 570,000 people signed up.

What does HMRC send after a deadline?

More than before it. Once a quarter shows as outstanding, HMRC’s systems send automatic reminder emails until it’s filed. They’re the same emails that keep firing in error during a known HMRC fault, so a chase email isn’t proof you actually missed. HMRC’s software developer newsletter of 29 July 2026 also says HMRC will write from October 2026 to people who missed the 7 August deadline, with up to two digital reminders to follow. A deadline that stays missed for longer can bring more letters.

So can you rely on HMRC to prompt you in time?

Treat anything that arrives as a bonus. The letters go to whole waves of taxpayers, the account messages depend on your contact settings and on signing in, and the press pushes are national, not personal. The safe assumption, and the one HMRC’s own guidance points to, is that the four dates are yours to track.

How do you make sure you hear in time?

  • Add every deadline to your calendar in one click, each with a 7-day warning built in. Works with Google Calendar, Outlook and Apple Calendar.
  • Get a free email 7 days before each deadline: the quarterly updates plus the January and July payments on account. No account, no software sign-up.
  • Check whether your MTD software shows or sends deadline alerts, and switch them on.

What if a reminder never came and you’ve missed one?

For the 2026-27 tax year there are no penalty points for a late quarterly update (HMRC’s penalty guidance (opens in a new tab) confirms it), so file as soon as you can and you’re square. Missed the 7 August deadline? walks through exactly what to do.
