Why QuarterFile exists
Making Tax Digital turns one tax return a year into five filings. The answer on offer was accounting software. We think someone with two flats or a side trade needs something much smaller.
Nobody asked for Making Tax Digital
It arrived anyway, and it arrives in waves. By the end of them, a landlord with a couple of flats or someone with a steady side trade will be told to keep digital records and file quarterly, like they run a finance department.

Qualifying income is your combined gross income from self-employment and property, before expenses. Your own date comes down to that one number, and the checker finds it in about two minutes.
The tools that existed were the wrong size
Three real options, and every one of them asks you to do more than the job needs.
Accounting suites
£15 to £30 a month, built for a business with a bookkeeper. The four things you need are buried under fifty you don’t.
The free tools on HMRC’s list
Several are genuinely free and will keep you compliant. Most stop at filing: no bank statement import, no memory of your categories, no reminder before a deadline.
Spreadsheets
What most people actually use, and not compliant on their own: the quarterly update has to be sent digitally, so a spreadsheet needs bridging software on top.

Who builds it
QuarterFile is an independent UK software business with one product. Support comes from the people who build it.
Your records are held in the UK, and they stay yours: export them as CSV whenever you like, including after you cancel. Our guides link to HMRC’s own pages, so you can check what we tell you.
QuarterFile is record-keeping and filing software, not tax advice. For anything about your own tax position, check with your accountant or HMRC.

Where we’re up to
HMRC recognition is in progress, and sign-ups are not open yet. Filing opens for the 7 February 2027 quarter. Until then you can check your MTD date, read the guides and join the reminder list: we’ll email you the day sign-ups open.
Nobody asked for MTD. We just make it painless.
