The whole job
Everything you need. Nothing you don’t.
Digital records, quarterly filing, reminders and receipts, designed around the MTD job, not around an accounting suite.
Your statement in, your quarter out
Upload a bank CSV: QuarterFile remembers your columns and suggests a category for every line.
You confirm every line
Suggestions are suggestions: nothing counts towards a quarter until you confirm or change it.
Filed, receipted, kept on file
Every filed quarter keeps its HMRC receipt: proof you can point to years later, held in the UK.
Why us
Built for landlords and sole traders
See MTD explained for your situation: landlords, sole traders, content creators, gig drivers, Airbnb and short-let hosts and marketplace sellers.
10 min
is all a quarter should take
Import, confirm, file. Your column mapping is remembered, so the second quarter is faster than the first.
Reminders that respect your diary
One email thirty days before, one at seven days, one the day before. No newsletter, no nagging.
Proof you can point to, years later
Every filed quarter keeps its HMRC receipt: reference, timestamp and totals, in your history for good.
Know where the quarter stands, always
Confirmed income and expenses roll up as you go: no surprises in filing week, no spreadsheet arithmetic at midnight.
Step by step
Your quarter, in three steps.
Step 1: Import your statement
Drop in the quarter’s bank CSV. Duplicates are flagged before anything is saved.
Step 2: Review & confirm
Every line gets a suggested category. You confirm or change each one.
Step 3: File to HMRC
Check your totals and file. You get a receipt with HMRC’s reference, kept for as long as HMRC could ask about it.

The whole idea
Deliberately not accounting software.
Accounting suites are built for businesses with accountants. If you have one property or one trade, you don’t need a full set of books. You need four updates a year, done.

Questions
Questions, answered plainly
What is a quarterly update?
A quarterly update is the summary of your income and expenses that HMRC now wants four times a year under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. It’s not a tax return. It’s a running summary, and QuarterFile builds it from your records automatically. Our guide to quarterly updates explains what HMRC actually wants, in plain English.
Is QuarterFile accounting software?
Deliberately not. No ledgers, no modules, no add-on maze. QuarterFile does one thing: keeps your digital records and files your quarterly updates. There’s one optional paid tier, Plus (the version built for a ten-minute quarter), and nothing else to buy. If you need full accounts, you’ll want something bigger, and more expensive.
Is QuarterFile HMRC-recognised?
Recognition is in progress. Filing opens for the 7 February 2027 quarter. We won’t wear the badge until gov.uk lists us. Sign-ups aren’t open yet: the deadline reminder list is the part that’s live today, and we’ll email you the day sign-ups open.
There are free MTD tools. Why would I pay?
You might not: our guide to the best free MTD software compares the genuinely free options, limits and all, including the filing some banks now build into a business account. QuarterFile Free files your quarters by hand, free forever, and will include the final declaration (the first one isn’t due until 31 January 2028). QuarterFile Plus is for the version where your bank statement does the typing: import, confirmed suggestions, a set-aside estimate, and someone who answers email in deadline week. Free tools can file a quarter, including tools built into some business bank accounts. QuarterFile is built around the rest of the job, with no bank switch required: a reminder before it matters, your bank statement or spreadsheet doing the typing, every figure confirmed by you before it goes, an HMRC receipt kept for each filing, and up to five businesses on one flat price.
What if I make a mistake in a filed quarter?
Quarterly updates are cumulative (each one carries your whole year so far), so you fix the transaction in your records and the next update carries the correction automatically. The year-end final declaration settles the final figures. Our guide to correcting a filed quarter walks through how fixing works.
What happens at the end of the tax year?
One last submission, the final declaration, replaces the Self Assessment tax return. Your four quarterly updates carry through automatically; you add anything they don’t cover (other income, allowances, adjustments) and your tax is worked out on the result. The first covers 2026-27 and is due by 31 January 2028. It will be part of QuarterFile Free as well as Plus. Our guide to the final declaration explains what it settles that quarterly updates don’t.
Does MTD apply to me?
It depends on your gross income from property and self-employment. Our free two-minute checker shows you which April start date your answers point to, and we’ll remind you before it matters.
I have an accountant. Do I still need this?
Many accountants ask clients to keep digital records and file quarters themselves. The accountant then handles the year-end. QuarterFile covers exactly that quarterly part. If you’re unsure how to split the work, ask your accountant.
Do you need access to my bank account?
No. QuarterFile never connects to your bank and never asks for your banking login. You download a CSV statement from your own online banking and upload it, or type your transactions in by hand. That is the only way figures get in, and you confirm every line before it counts towards a quarter.
What happens to my data?
It’s yours. Held in the UK, exportable any time as CSV, never used to train AI models, and deleted when you ask (filed receipts are kept as HMRC requires). Details in our privacy policy.
