Accessibility statement

QuarterFile is built for people doing a chore they didn’t choose. Accessibility is how the product is meant to work.

What we build to

  • WCAG 2.2 level AA. Every colour pairing in the design system is checked by an automated script that reads the design tokens out of the stylesheet and asserts the whole contrast matrix, so the numbers can’t quietly drift from the code. Releases also get a manual keyboard and screen-reader pass.
  • 18px base text and generous line height.
  • Interactive controls meet WCAG 2.2’s minimum target size, and the ones you use most (buttons, form fields, the things you tap on a phone) are comfortably larger.
  • Contrast of at least 4.5:1 for text, and at least 3:1 for the edges of controls; state is never shown by colour alone.
  • Full keyboard operation with a visible focus indicator; a skip-to-content link on every page.
  • No time limits inside the app: nothing you’re part-way through expires while you work on it, and we don’t sign you out for being slow.
  • Animations respect your “reduce motion” system setting.

Known limitations

The HMRC sign-in step happens on HMRC’s own website, whose accessibility we don’t control. That handover has a 15-minute security window at our end; if it lapses, start the connection again and you lose nothing. The emailed sign-in code is the other timed step: it lasts 10 minutes, and if it expires you can ask for another from the same screen. Both windows exist to keep an account secure, and nothing else in the product is timed. CSV column mapping uses tables that are usable but dense with a screen reader. We’re improving this.

We haven’t had QuarterFile independently audited for accessibility yet, and we won’t claim a conformance rating we haven’t earned. What’s above is what we build to and test for ourselves.
