Does MTD apply to content creators and influencers?
If you make money from YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Instagram, Patreon, brand deals or affiliate links, HMRC generally treats it as self-employment, which means Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax can apply to you, just as it does to any sole trader.
First: do you need to tell HMRC at all?
There is a £1,000 tax-free “trading allowance” for side income. If everything you earn from creating content (and any other side hustle) adds up to more than £1,000 in a tax year, you need to tell HMRC, usually by registering for Self Assessment by 5 October after the tax year ends. Under £1,000, the allowance normally covers you and there is nothing to file.
When MTD for Income Tax kicks in
MTD is being switched on in waves, based on your gross qualifying income, your total income before expenses:
- From April 2026: gross income over £50,000
- From April 2027: gross income over £30,000
- From April 2028: gross income over £20,000
Those dates come from HMRC’s guidance on who needs to use MTD for Income Tax (opens in a new tab). It is the gross figure that counts, and it combines your self-employment and any property income. Remember that gifts and freebies count towards it too. Not sure which wave you are in? The free checker gives your exact start date in two minutes.
Your platforms are (usually) one business
Ad revenue, subscriptions, tips, sponsorships and affiliate commissions are normally added together as one self-employment, rather than reported separately. Some of it may be foreign income (Google, Twitch and others often pay from abroad), which can carry its own rules. Where your set-up is anything other than straightforward, check with your accountant or HMRC.
